Description:

Music has a unique role in storytelling that reaches back to the ancient days. In a purely audio medium, music takes on more weight and more space. Raul Vega is a composer and digital instrument-builder for Hans Zimmer, and the creator of Rose Drive, a multilayered conspiracy mystery that features Vega’s own original music. Join us for a conversation led by Elena Fernández Collins discussing the importance of music in the process of storytelling and Vega’s approach to achieving emotional complexity and character depth.

This panel will be live-streamed on YouTube with live closed captioning and an ASL interpreter.

Rose Drive, Swiss and Lali Hijack Hollywood (Phantom Ape)

Raul Vega is a Los Angeles based composer, sample developer, and audio editor. For over 8 years he has been working on film scores as a digital instrument builder for legendary composer Hans Zimmer. He has crafted the musical tools used to create the scores for films such as Dunkirk, Bladerunner 2049, Interstellar, Man of Steel, Dark Phoenix and the re-imagination of Disney’s The Lion King, (2019). When he’s not making cool instruments for film music, he likes creating scripted audio fiction podcasts for his multi-media production company Phantom Ape. His first one, Rose Drive, landed a mention in Forbes as “One Of The Top Ten Best Podcasts of 2018”. With Swiss and Lali Hijack HOLLYWOOD! He hopes to simply bring a smile to people’s faces during this crazy time. His belief is that you can have all the quality and immersion of a TV show in an audio-only medium. The best part about what he does is getting to create the visuals using only sound, persuading his listeners to use their imagination to fill in the blanks. After all, imagination is the root of all storytelling. What’s the fun of having it if you never get to use it?
